The Bible is perhaps the most famous religious scripture. This book brings together several ancient works.
The Bible is the best-selling book of all time, with over 100 million copies sold annually. However, it was written so long ago that today many questions arise about its content, not even from a moral, but from a historical point of view.
There are many mysteries in the Bible that people have been trying to solve for centuries. The most famous such riddles will be discussed below.
Holy grail. In Christian mythology, the Holy Grail is an important subject. It is believed that Jesus used this dish or bowl or plate during the Last Supper. But then what happened to this shrine, which had miraculous capabilities? It is believed that at the end of the 12th century, the Holy Grail was brought to England by Joseph of Arimathea. In the Middle Ages, the belief in the existence of this object and its search did not stop. The Templars were said to have owned the Grail. This is likely due to their extreme influence at the time of the spread of legends about the artifact. There were quite real bowls that were considered the Grail. One of them is located in the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary in Valencia. It was believed that St. Peter brought it to Rome in the 1st century, and St. Lawrence brought it to Spain in the 3rd century. Scientists say that this subject may well lay claim to the title of the real Holy Grail. The product from Valencia was created somewhere in the Middle East between the 4th century BC. and the 1st century A.D. According to other sources, the valuable artifact is hidden either under the Rosslyn Chapel, or at the source on Glastonbury Rock. Conspiracy theorists believe that this artifact is owned by some secret organization of its defenders. Others believe that at one time the Templars hid the Grail on Oak Island, today it is called the Money Pit of Nova Scotia.
Ark of the Covenant. The Bible contains a description of this container in which the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments were kept. The Epistle to the Hebrews says that there was also a vessel with manna and Aaron's staff. This unique artifact was located in Jerusalem until the city was sacked by the Babylonians. The temple itself was destroyed. Since then, the Ark has been a true legend, disappearing from sight. But there are many theories about where it might be: the ark could be deliberately hidden by the priests of the Jerusalem temple, or the Babylonians or the prince of Ethiopia could have taken it to their place. At one time, archaeologists discovered a whole branched network of tunnels under the Jerusalem Temple, but the law prohibits excavation further in this place. Today, on the site of the first temple of Solomon, there is already one of the most important Islamic shrines, a mosque called "Dome of the Rock". The Bible says that during the construction of the temple here, a special platform was created for the Ark of the Covenant. In the event of an attack on the temple, the shrine was lowered underground, into tunnels. It is likely that the artifact is still out there somewhere.
Sodom and Gomorrah. There is a biblical story about the destruction of the cities of Sodom, Gomorrah, Sevoim and Adma for the sins of their inhabitants. But did such settlements exist in reality? And if so, where were they? The Bible says that the Lord destroyed the cities by sending burning sulfur and fire to them from heaven. Over the centuries in Christianity and Islam, the very words Sodom and Gomorrah have become synonymous with ingrained sin and the punishment for this by God. Today, archaeologists argue over whether such cities actually existed. The Bible clearly indicates that these places were located near the Dead Sea. In 1973, possible contenders were discovered. They, like the structures excavated back in 1965 by archaeologist Paul Lapp, are located just near the Dead Sea. Specialists found traces of combustion and sulfur particles on the stones. For some reason, these ancient cities suddenly ceased to exist by the end of the early Bronze Age.
Eden. Historians are inclined to think that the story of Eden is most likely fictional. But there are also those who believe in the reality of the mythological garden. It remains only to find out where he existed. And in the Bible itself, the exact place where Eden was located is indicated. That is why many people tried to find the Garden of Eden. There are many options, of which it is worth highlighting the rivers of the coast of the Ganges, Araks, Karun, Diyala, Kerhe, Wadi ar-Rum and even the Nile. According to some hypotheses, Eden is located at the sources of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which originate in Mesopotamia or in the territory of modern Egypt. Look for traces of Eden in Africa and the Persian Gulf. Although the true location of the biblical Eden is still a mystery, there is a rather interesting nuance to this narrative. The Bible says that near the garden there was a place like Ethiopia. Since 1974, paleontologists have studied six million years of life on the planet of man and his ancestors. It turned out that Ethiopia is the best place for the birth of our species. Consequently, science directly indicates that it was there that the real Eden was located.
Bible code. Bible Students have repeatedly noted that there are some encoded messages in this book. Is this accidental? This code is also called the "Torah code". This is a sequence of letters in a book that can be decoded and learned about the prophecies of the authors. Research on this topic is popularly presented in the book The Bible Code. The main decryption method is based on an equidistant alphabetical sequence. It is believed that to expand the code, one must take any letter as a starting point and count any number of gaps. Then, from the starting point, you need to select letters with equal spacing, highlighting the necessary ones. The "Bible Codes" served as the basis for predictions that were published and used many times by some people. The popularization of the code was carried out by journalist Michael Drosnin. So, with the help of the holy book in 1994, he was able to predict the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin the next year.
Ten lost knees. This is the name of the tribes of the descendants of ten from the tribes of Israel. After the fall of the Northern Israel kingdom, these tribes were captured by the Assyrians. Jewish researchers ask themselves what happened to their relatives next? Do they exist secretly somewhere and can they return to their homeland? The story of the lost knees is partially confirmed by historical fact, it is confirmed by written religious sources, there is a lot of room for speculation. There are semi-fantastic versions about who could have descended from these lost knees. The descendants include Native Americans, Japanese, British and Irish. The Chinese believe that the Jews of Kaifeng could have descended from such a lost tribe.
Pharaoh Exodus. There is a story in the Bible that during the Exodus of the Jews, a certain pharaoh ruled ancient Egypt. The chapters of the Book of Exodus tell how the Egyptians enslaved the children of Israel, how the Lord sent a plague to Egypt to free his people. We learned how the army persecuted the Jews and how they managed to get through the Red Sea. But what kind of ruler did Egypt have? In the Holy Book, he is referred to simply as "Pharaoh." If this document is considered authentic from a historical point of view, then it is necessary to find out the name of this ruler. There is an opinion in popular culture that it was Ramses the Great. That's just not any documentary or archaeological evidence of any epidemics during his reign, or the pursuit of fleeing Jewish slaves. Historians have no evidence whatsoever to formulate a theory about a particular pharaoh from the Exodus story.
Noah's Ark. The story of the Flood is known to most people, because it is repeated in different religions. Since the second century, Christians, Jews and Muslims have enthusiastically searched for the physical remains of the ark. Here are just any scientific evidence of its existence, no expeditions and research have been able to find it. Experts consider such searches a "ghost chase." The only clue in this story is the mention of the years of Ararat in the biblical legend. By the middle of the 19th century, archaeologists were able to identify the possible arrival sites of the ark. It is believed that this could have been the kingdom of Urartu, the Assyrian Empire, the early kingdoms of Judea. Thus, it would be logical to look for the ark in the mountains of modern Armenia or in the east of Turkey. Until the 19th century, these areas were sparsely populated; it was unrealistic to send expeditions here. And by the beginning of this century, two new candidates for the title of Noah's ark appeared. The first is the Ararat anomaly, located near its main peak. In the images of this area from above and even from space, a dark spot is visible on the snow cap of the peak. Another potential location for the ark is the area near Dogubayazit, 29 kilometers south of Big Ararat.
Beloved disciple of Jesus. As you know, Jesus Christ had 12 disciples. But which of them was his favorite? This is one of the most important mysteries of the Bible. The Gospel of John says that one of the disciples reclined on the teacher's chest during the Last Supper. But there is an opinion that this book itself was written from the words of that very favorite. But his name is not mentioned anywhere, which makes this story even more mysterious. Some scholars believe that this person could have been Lazarus, brother of Mary and Martha of Bethany. It was him that Jesus raised from the dead in due time. This version is proved by the fact that when the sisters called Jesus to help Lazarus, they said to him: "Lord, the one you love is sick." Other modern researchers put forward the original version - Mary Magdalene was the favorite disciple of Jesus Christ. This idea is very similar to what Dan Brown wrote about in his bestselling book.
Authorship of the Gospels. The Gospels are the most important part of the New Testament. Until the 18th century, the authorship of these books was not questioned. And only relatively recently, theologians were able to study the history of the Bible, doubts immediately arose about the participation in the writing of the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke and John. The fact is that the manner of writing the books suggests that they were written by those who either did not know the apostles, or were not. It will hardly be possible to reveal such a secret. We can only hope that someday the main source of all the Gospels will be revealed. This is the only way to explain all those anomalies that literally “scream” about non-apostolic authorship.
