The second obstetric week of pregnancy is still the preparatory week. At the end of this week or the beginning of the next (from the 14th day from the beginning of the last menstruation), ovulation will occur and, possibly, fertilization of the egg.

In total, a woman prepares 20 or more follicles - the embryos of an egg - but usually only one reaches full development and ovulation. It is located in a special so-called graaf bubble filled with liquid.

By the end of the second week since the beginning of the last menstruation, the bubble will become quite large and will protrude above the surface of the ovary. When ovulation occurs, the graaf bubble will rupture, the egg will be released into the fallopian tube, where fertilization takes place.

Sometimes in the ovaries 2-3 eggs ripen at the same time, then in case of fertilization, multiple pregnancies may develop. In place of the former bubble, a new formation will appear - a yellow body. It provides hormonal support for pregnant women, and it is often its quirks that cause excruciating toxicosis in expectant mothers.

Numerous tests exist to know exactly when conception is most likely. The most accurate, but not the most convenient way to determine the timing of ovulation is to measure the basal temperature (temperature in the rectum). If we measure this temperature every day at a certain time for several months and record it on a graph, we can quite accurately indicate when the next ovulation will occur. Until this moment, the basal temperature is less than 37.0 ° C, and after that it is above 37.0 ° C. On the eve of the rise in temperature, ovulation occurs.

The most common ovulation tests are strips similar to those used to determine pregnancy. The desired reagent is applied to the paper. After immersing it in urine, the result will come to light after a while. One strip - no ovulation, two strips - there is ovulation. A more expensive type of test is tablets. Instead of a paper strip, you get a plastic case with a special window. The accuracy of the tablet tests is considered more reliable.

There are also tests that are not based on urine analysis but on saliva analysis. Scientists have found that 2-3 days before ovulation, the concentration of chlorides (KCl, MgCl, CaCl, NaCl) changes in saliva. Usually, a saliva ovulation test (for example, Your Cycle) is a small device with a lens on which you apply a drop of saliva and let it dry. The result will be received in a few minutes.

Such tests are convenient in that they allow you to determine the approximate date of ovulation 2-3 days before its onset, and therefore, use this information to prevent unwanted pregnancy or, on the contrary, to plan the sex of the unborn child.

Boy or girl?

There are many methods for planning the sex of a child. The overwhelming majority of them are just popular superstitions or hard-to-prove facts. For example, many believe that if the parents of the unborn child within 2 months before conception will adhere to a special diet ("diet for boys" or "diet for girls"), then they will certainly have a child of the desired gender.

"Boys' diet" includes meat, potatoes, oranges, bananas, apricots, peaches, dates, mushrooms, cherries. You cannot eat raw cabbage, dairy products, nuts, beans, green salad. And if you want a girl that you need to eat, on the contrary, more dairy products and nuts, as well as eggplants, cucumbers, beets, carrots, peppers, onions. And exclude from the menu meat, potatoes, citrus fruits, currants and melons.

The second most popular popular method is counting according to the theory of "blood renewal" depending on the date of birth of the husband and wife. In men, the blood is renewed every 4 years, in women - every three years. The sex of the unborn child is determined by the one of the spouses whose blood is "stronger". Divide the mother's age in the estimated month of conception by 3, and the father's age by 4. The one with the largest remainder in the division wins. However, if the expectant mother has Rh negative blood, then everything will be the other way around. The winner is the one with the least balance.

Astrologers claim that the sex of the unborn child depends on which zodiac constellation (male or female) the Moon will be in on the day of conception and how it will aspect with the position of the Moon in the woman's natal chart. The calculations are quite complicated: you need to know the exact time and place of birth of the mother, take into account the geographical place of conception and not be mistaken with its time, since the Moon is in one constellation or another for only about 2.5 days. The male constellations include Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius, the female Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces.

There are also ways of planning the sex of the child, associated with a particular schedule of sexual activity (up to complete abstinence), with a change in the environment of the vagina by douching (an acidic environment is favorable for conceiving a girl, an alkaline environment for a boy), as well as completely unproven relationships between the mother's age and time years of conception, the ratio of months of birth of the future father and mother, even the strength of a woman's orgasm at the moment of conception.

The only method that can claim the title of scientific today is planning the sex of the child using the ovulation period. The essence of the method is as follows. A woman's egg always carries the female X chromosome. A male sperm carries either the female X chromosome or the male Y chromosome.

Depending on which sperm fertilizes the egg, you get either a boy (XY) or a girl (XX). Scientists have found that sperm X and Y behave differently. The one carrying the male Y chromosome is more mobile, but less viable. And the "female" sperm with the X chromosome is slower, but tenacious.

An important conclusion follows from this. If you want a sperm with a male chromosome to come to the finish line first, then you should engage in conception day after day with ovulation or not earlier than the day before. Then the active "male" sperm will reach the egg, which is already ready for fertilization, and deliver its Y chromosome there faster than its slow competitors with the X chromosome.

If you want a girl, do the opposite. Never have sex during ovulation. It is best to do this 2-3 days before the deadline. Then the fast Y-spermatozoa will not have time to fertilize the egg - it has not yet matured completely - and will die, while the strongest X-spermatozoa will survive. And during ovulation, it is they who will provide you with the birth of a lovely daughter. The effectiveness of the method, according to scientists, is 80%.

And now a little about conception. It is believed that the most effective position for conception is missionary (man on top, woman on bottom) or man behind, and the woman kneels on her elbows. It is good for a woman to lie down for half an hour after sex, putting a pillow under her legs and hips - this increases the likelihood of conception.

In addition, it is not recommended for a woman to spend some time active vaginal toilet, especially douching, so as not to change the acid-base balance favorable for conception. The usual hygiene procedures are enough.
